What is square foot gardening? A simple, unique and versatile system that adapts to all levels of experience, physical ability, and geographical location. Grow all you want and need in only 20% of the space of a conventional row garden. Save time, water, work and money! I am following the square foot gardening method, and I'll be using it as a reference through out the blog. Square foot gardening invented by the genius Mel Bartholomew! Learn more about it in his website , Or order his very very valuable book. It may come in downloadable PDF files too, if you search.
Here are the 10 things that make SFG different from traditional row gardening:
- Layout. Arrange your garden in squares, not rows. Lay it out in 4′x4′ planting areas. Companion plants can help each other grow bigger and tastier!
- Boxes. Build boxes to hold a new soil mix above ground. Your existing soil doesn't matter! forget about it, and just worry about the new soil called Mel's Mix.
- Aisles. Space boxes 3′ apart to form walking aisles. It makes it easier to walk and sit around the boxes, especially when your plants get really big and spill out of the boxes a little.
- Soil. Fill boxes with Mel’s special soil mix: 1/3 blended compost (please please make your own! The compost sold in Kuwait is a little shady) , 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 coarse vermiculite (All available in True Value).
- Grid. Make a permanent square foot grid for the top of each box. A MUST!
- Care. NEVER WALK ON YOUR GROWING SOIL. This is how the soil stays so fluffy and airy for the roots stay happy. Tend your garden from the aisles.
- Select. Plant a different flower, vegetable, or herb crop in each square foot, using 1, 4, 9, or 16 plants per square foot. You might, for example, plant a single tomato in a square, but you’d plant 16 carrots in another. Using this system, you can cram a lot of garden into a small space and still get excellent yields.
- Plant. Conserve seeds. Plant only a pinch (2 or 3 seeds) per hole. Place transplants in a slight saucer-shaped depression. This means you wont waste seeds! The traditional way is to plant lots of seeds then cut off the majority and leave the strongest.
- Water. Water by hand from a bucket of sun-warmed water.
- Harvest. When you finish harvesting a square foot, add only compost and replant it with a new and different crop.

The Hermès Birkin bag stands as perhaps the most legendary symbol of opulence in the luxury market. Created for actress and singer Jane Birkin, this meticulously crafted bag has evolved beyond its status as a mere accessory to become a fashion icon and prized possession that often appreciates in value with passing years. With prices beginning at five figures and waiting lists that can span years, the Birkin embodies the ultimate expression of rarity in luxury goods.
The History and HeritageThe Birkin bag was created from a serendipitous conversation in 1984 when Jane Birkin, sitting next to Hermes chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight from Paris to London, complained about not finding a leather weekend bag that met her requirements. Dumas immediately sketched a design on an airplane sickness bag—and the Birkin was born.
Every Birkin is handcrafted by a single artisan in France, requiring between 18 and 25 hours to complete. This meticulous artisanship, combined with the use of exceptional materials, accounts for both its considerable price tag and extraordinary durability.
Size Options and Models
The Birkin comes in several sizes, each marked by the bag’s width in centimeters:
Birkin 25cm: The most popular size at present, perfect for everyday essentials while staying elegant and compact
Birkin 30cm: The standard size that combines practicality with elegance
Birkin 35cm: A roomier option favored for its space as a day bag or for travel
Birkin 40cm: More rare, designed for travel or as a statement piece
Premium Materials and Workmanship
Hermès sources the best materials for its Birkin bags, with options including:
Togo Calfskin: A long-lasting, pebbled leather with a slight sheen
Clemence: A more supple leather with a matte finish
Epsom: A textured printed leather known for being lightweight and scratch-resistant
Swift: A refined leather with a subtle sheen
Ostrich: Recognized for its unique quill bumps
Lizard: Displaying delicate, small scales in a unique pattern
Crocodile and Alligator: The most prestigious and expensive options, showcasing larger scales and extraordinary luster
The Most Sought-After Varieties
Among connoisseurs and aficionados, certain Birkin editions are highlighted for their exceptional rarity and desirability:
Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Birkin: Often known as “the Holy Grail” of purses, this bag features meticulously dyed crocodile skin that creates a tonal effect reminiscent of the Himalayan mountains. When embellished with diamond hardware, these bags have sold at sale for over $300,000.
Diamond Birkins: Boasting hardware adorned with diamonds, these represent the pinnacle fusion of handbag expertise and high jewelry.
Sellier vs. Retourne: Birkins come in two principal construction styles—the rigid Sellier with noticeable outside stitching or the more supple Retourne with internal stitching.
Limited Editions: Special collections like the Faubourg (resembling the façade of the Hermes flagship store) or Cargo (featuring additional external pockets) demand significant premiums.
HSS (Horseshoe Stamp): These special-order Birkins allow clients to tailor color combinations and hardware, making them one-of-a-kind collector’s items.
Color Spectrum
Hermès is renowned for its broad color palette, with certain hues achieving legendary status among collectors:
Noir (Black): The timeless flexible option
Gold: A rich caramel tan that has become a characteristic Hermès color
Blue Electric: A intense, saturated blue
Rouge H: A intense Hermès red with brownish undertones
Taupe: A refined neutral gray-brown
Craie: A delicate off-white shade
Vert (various green shades): From deep forest to bright emerald tones
The Monetary Value
While premium fashion items typically lose value after purchase, Birkins often appreciate—particularly rare colors, exotic materials, or limited editions. The pre-owned market for certified Birkins has developed substantially, with some styles appreciating 14% annually on average, exceeding traditional investment classes.
Verification Concerns
The Birkin’s status as a symbol of luxury has unfortunately led to a substantial market for counterfeits. Genuine Birkins feature impeccable craftsmanship with:
Exact, even stitching
Superior hardware with proper engravings
A particular date stamp format
Accompanying authenticity cards and proper packaging
The unique Hermès saddle stitch
Market Accessibility
Purchasing a Birkin directly from an Hermès boutique remains challenging, as the bags are not displayed for regular purchase. Instead, they are typically offered to loyal clients who have shown loyalty to the brand. This deliberate scarcity has only increased the Birkin’s legendary reputation and appeal.
Cultural Influence
The Birkin has been showcased prominently in media, perhaps most memorably in an episode of “Sex and the City” where Samantha uses a client’s name to skip the waiting list, and in countless celebrity photos. It has become synonymous for ultimate luxury and exclusivity, with collectors developing entire “collections” of different sizes, colors, and materials.
Summary
More than just a handbag, the Hermès Birkin symbolizes the union of skilled expertise, enduring design, and deliberate exclusivity. Its continued popularity despite its significant price point demonstrates both its quality and the strong allure of owning something truly exceptional. For fashion enthusiasts and collectors alike, the Birkin remains the definitive luxury item—a true classic that goes beyond fashion trends to achieve the status of wearable art.
